VOIP has been around for what seems like ages, but most people (myself included) still resort to using a regular ‘landline’ or mobile phone to make most calls. Free VoIP calls are obviously only available in places that have freely available Internet connections.

Companies such as FON are making inroads into WiFi sharing – sharing your WiFi connection with other users who happen to be in the area and in need. I personally don’t share my connection – I think I would find the road outside my apartment full of strangers sat in cars with laptops. Still, a quick google search turns up several directories of freely available hotspots in cities across the World.

By the way, the picture is of the soon to be released Amex TSP-VS501 dual-mode DECT handset, which offers to combine your regular landline and skype account in one. Wait for the release before getting too excited – most skype phones have been lacking in some way.
