review: Cingular 8525

The good: The Cingular 8525 is the first UMTS/HSDPA smart phone to be offered in the United States. It has integrated Bluetooth 2.0, Wi-Fi, and supports Cingular’s new location-based services. The Windows Mobile device also has push e-mail capabilities, a 2-megapixel camera, a spacious QWERTY keyboard, and good call quality.

The bad: The Cingular 8525 is on the heavier side and the navigation array is a bit cramped. The smart phone is also pricey.

The bottom line: For the ultimate road warrior, the 3G-enabled Cingular 8525 provides the speed, the power, and the productivity tools to get your work done on the go.

Duraflex Foldable Keyboard

A few days ago I wrote about a fabric keyboard this this one is a lot tougher. The Duraflex keyboard is made from durable silicone, and can be easily slid into your pocket with a simple fold. Another great thing about it is that it can last in any temperature, and is waterproof. Not to mention it’s about 1/4 the thickness of a regular keyboard.

Ultimate Back-Seat Entertainment System

With a popular car show going on today, there were some cool tech surprises, but the UVIA M100 mobile infotainment device from Unwired Vehicles is one of the sweetest. The box uses EV-DO mobile broadband from Verizon or Sprint to deliver rear-seat passengers in your vehicle a selection of entertainment apps along with broadband Internet access so you can check your e-mail, IM, check your fantasy teams and stream music and video. These products can be either installed in the head rests, of the headliner. The only thing you will need to be aware of is that you’ll need a 3G wireless broadband antenna is mounted externally to increase reception quality and bandwidth throughput.

The UVIA M100 will be available in Arizona, California and Nevada in December 2006 and will be available nationally in early 2007 for $3,499.

Rumor: Zune to Pay You For Sharing Songs?

One new feature with the Zune is that it’ll let you share songs with other Zune users with the WiFi capability. The only trick is that after listening to the song three times you’ll have to buy it for $1. Now, if you buy the song, then the person who sent you the song will get “1 credit.” The more and more credits you earn, the more possible free songs, and supplies you could get.

Google Co-op Launches Tomorrow

Google just launched a customized search service called Google Co-op (screen shots below). Co-op allows a user to create and launch a search engine with just a few specific websites included. Searches will return results from only that website.

Users have a number of options to customize the search engine: choosing which pages they want to include in their index, how the content should be prioritized, whether others can contribute to the
index, and what the search results page will look like.

For bloggers, using Google Co-op may be a better choice than the built in search feature. A search engine can be created that searches just a single site, and Google search is generally better than search features included with blog software, and with the addition of Adsense this will generate a separate income stream as well.

Firefox 2 launches tomorrow

The second generation of massively popular anti-IE browser Firefox (is that enough propaganda for you?) is officially released tomorrow, aiming to build on the continuing success of the first version and take further market share from Internet Explorer. Perhaps unsurprisingly, the leap from FF1 to FF2 isn’t as massive as the leap from IE6 to IE7, but then FF1 was a better browser than IE6. Also, many of the features now standard in Firefox version 2 were available as plugins for Firefox 1. Still, it’s my belief that software runs more efficiently with built-in features than lots of added plug-ins.
